In 2017, Finland will release a special two-euro coin celebrating the country’s centenary of independence. Mint of Finland has also submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Finance for a special coin paying tribute to Finnish nature, to be released in the autumn of 2017. The special coins are a part of the centenary programme of Finland’s independence.
The planned mintage of the Independent Finland 100 Years special coin is 2.5 million and that of the Finnish nature special coin 0.5 million. The final decision on minting the coins lies with the Ministry of Finance. A commemorative coin can be obtained as change in regular circulation, or it can be purchased from the Mint of Finland online shop and from retailers.
Each country using the euro as its currency is allowed to release two commemorative two-euro coins each year. These special coins are legal tender in all euro countries. The reverse of a special two-euro coin is identical to normal circulation pieces, while the national side of the coin bears the themed image. Mint of Finland’s website lists all commemorative two-euro coins released in Finland to date.
The EU has approved the design proposed by Finland for the Independent Finland 100 Years special coin. The design of the Finnish Nature special coin will be revealed later this year.
